Sidewalk Marathon: Lace up your shoes for 26.2 miles in 30 days

KEARNEY - The Sidewalk Marathon is an inspiring 30-day walking program, sponsored by CHI Health, taking place across the state from September 17 and 18 until October 17. The goal is to help people take those initial steps to getting active and healthy by walking 26.2 miles in 30 days. The Sidewalk Marathon comes with a step-by-step program for you to follow with exercise plans, healthy recipes and advice from expert health coaches. The public is invited to join for free, by registering at

The program starts with a kick-off event at noon, September 18 in the Good Samaritan revolving door lobby, 10 East 31st Street, Kearney. Participants are asked to register online or come early for late registration. Those registered before noon (central time) on September 17 will be eligible to win an Apple iPad. At the kick-off event, participants will join in stretching and a group walk around the hospital neighborhood followed by a free healthy grab ‘n go lunch and starter pack prize.

Some reasons to lace up the sneakers:

• Walking 20 extra minutes a day can burn seven pounds of body fat a year!

• You’ll have more energy. Walking boosts circulation and increases oxygen so you feel more alert and energized.

• It can reduce your stress, cholesterol and blood pressure while it fights dementia, arthritis, depression and diabetes.

• You’ll smile more. Studies show that even a 5 to 10-minute walk can make a difference. Your brain releases dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine, which make you feel good.

In addition to the pre-registration prize drawing, Sidewalk Marathon participants are eligible to win an Apple Watch for achieving wellness goals each week of the program. Beginner, intermediate and advanced options are part of the 2017 Sidewalk marathon.
