Virtually Integrated Care

Video Nurse

There’s a new nurse on your care team

CHI Health Good Samaritan uses the Virtually Integrated Care Team model. This model is also in place at CHI Health St. Elizabeth in Lincoln and CHI Health Immanuel in Omaha.

Finding even better ways to care for our patients and deliver a superior consumer experience is a priority for CHI Health. One of our newer programs uses video technology to add another level of nursing care. The model, called Virtually Integrated Care Team, adds a highly-trained video nurse to the care team—one who works closely with our registered nurses (RNs) and certified nurse assistants (CNAs) at the bedside—giving each patient more one-to-one attention.

How the Virtually Integrated Care Team Model works

Your room is equipped with a video system connecting you to a specially trained video nurse. You will meet your video nurse when you are admitted to the unit. She will have access to all your care information and will work with your care team to ensure that:

  • You are involved in your care planning and know what’s ahead.
  • Your questions are answered in a timely manner.
  • The care you receive is coordinated and as convenient as possible.
  • You have the education and resources you need to continue your care following discharge.
  • You have these advantages plus all the hands-on care of your bedside nurses.

How we’re protecting your privacy

Every member of your care team is committed to maintaining your privacy and the security of your health information. The video camera will not be used to record you at any time and we will always ask your permission before turning the camera toward you.

You’re at the center of care

Your team of experts coordinates your care in the following ways:

  • Your physician oversees your medical care.
  • Your unit primary nurse provides care at your bedside.
  • Your specially trained video nurse, assists in coordinating your care, provides information and education via the camera
  • Your certified nursing assistant takes your vital signs and assists with daily activities such as bathing and walking.

You are in control

You always know when the camera is on. It will be turned away, toward the window, when off. The video nurse will ask permission before turning the camera toward you.

You decide when your video nurse should visit. She or he will check in with you each morning for a short, scheduled visit, then as needed throughout the day. You can always request a later visit or additional visits at your convenience.

Use your call light to contact your video nurse. Primary care staff will make sure he or she is available to help.

Locations offering this innovative program

CHI Health is developing this innovative program in cooperation with the CHI Institute for Research and Innovation (CIRI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Catholic Health Initiatives. CHI Health St. Elizabeth was the first hospital in Catholic Health Initiatives to pilot the Virtually Integrated Care Team model, which is now also in place at CHI Health Good Samaritan and CHI Health Immanuel in Omaha. CHI Health and Catholic Health Initiatives received a three-year, $1.45 million grant from the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) to expand this new approach to patient care.
